Zhongshan Fourth Road

Zhongshan Fourth Road in Chongqing's Yuzhong District is a short tree-lined street that formed the heart of the city's diplomatic and political quarter during its years as China's provisional wartime capital, from 1937 to 1946, after the Nationalist government relocated inland following the fall of Nanjing. The street and its side lanes housed the wartime residences and offices of foreign missions and Allied representatives, including the site associated with the Soviet embassy, and it lies close to the Stilwell Museum and other wartime-era compounds that made up the same diplomatic district. Surviving buildings along the road include Republican-era villas and government structures built in a mix of Chinese and Western architectural styles, with grey brick facades, tiled roofs, and iron gates typical of 1930s and 1940s Chongqing official architecture. The Chongqing Talks of 1945 between the Nationalist and Communist parties, in which Mao Zedong traveled to Chongqing to negotiate with Chiang Kai-shek over China's postwar political future, took place in buildings within this same wartime government quarter. Individual historic buildings along the street operate under separate management and hours, with some open as small museums or government offices and others closed to public entry, so the street functions today more as an open-air historic district than a single site with unified exhibits. Curatorial framing across the accessible buildings centers on the wartime capital period and the 1945 negotiations rather than a broader chronological history of the road, since most of the street's older fabric dates from this narrow twentieth-century window.
