Chongqing People's Great Hall (Renmin Auditorium)

The Chongqing People's Great Hall, also known as Renmin Auditorium, stands on Renmin Road in Yuzhong District and was built between 1951 and 1954 under a design team led by architect Yang Ting'an, commissioned by Southwest Military and Administrative Commission chairman He Long soon after the founding of the People's Republic of China. The building's distinctive circular auditorium and sweeping tiered roofline were modeled on Beijing's Temple of Heaven, adapted at a much larger scale in reinforced concrete to seat roughly 4,000 people, making it one of the largest Chinese-style public buildings constructed in the early PRC period. Flanking wings extend from the central rotunda in a design intended to symbolize unity among the ethnic groups of southwest China, which the hall administratively served as a regional assembly venue before Chongqing became a separate municipality. The complex preserves its original auditorium seating bowl, painted ceiling coffers, and glazed-tile roof in the imperial Chinese architectural vocabulary, executed with 1950s construction techniques and materials rather than traditional timber framing. Exhibits in an adjoining hall document the building's construction history and its role hosting political assemblies, cultural performances, and state visits since the 1950s. Curatorial presentation is primarily architectural and historical rather than object-based, focused on the building itself as an example of early PRC monumental design blending traditional Chinese form with Soviet-era institutional function. The hall underwent major restoration ahead of its designation as a national key cultural relic in 2013, with roof tiles, painted beams, and the plaza in front of the building refurbished while the reinforced-concrete structural frame remained largely intact from the original 1954 construction.
