Stilwell Museum

The Stilwell Museum occupies the former wartime residence of American General Joseph Stilwell on Jialingxin Road in Yuzhong District, Chongqing, preserving the building he used while serving as chief of staff to Chiang Kai-shek and commander of US forces in the China Burma India theater during the Second World War. Visitors enter the modest two-story residence and move through rooms furnished and arranged to reflect their wartime use, including Stilwell's office and living quarters, alongside exhibition rooms displaying photographs, documents, uniforms and personal effects that document Sino-American military cooperation during the war and Stilwell's role in the China Burma India campaign. The museum is compact, and a visit covering all the exhibition rooms and the residence itself takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Because the building is a preserved historic house rather than a large gallery space, the most notable visual details are the small, personal touches, such as Stilwell's office layout and the period furnishings, rather than any single standout artifact. The museum is quiet throughout the week, with weekday afternoons offering an unhurried, uncrowded visit; the museum closes entirely during January and February each year for annual renovation, so travel plans should account for this seasonal closure.
