Ciqikou Ancient Town

Ciqikou Ancient Town is a preserved Ming- and Qing-dynasty river port on the bank of the Jialing River in Shapingba District, Chongqing, named for the porcelain (ciqi) once shipped from its docks. Visitors enter along Cinan Street and wander a network of narrow stone-paved lanes lined with wood-and-tile courtyard houses, many now converted into teahouses, snack stalls and craft shops selling shoe-shaped Chongqing pastries, spicy pickled goods and hand-pulled sugar candy. Within the town, small paid sites such as Zhong's Courtyard, a restored merchant residence, and Baolun Temple, an active Buddhist temple on the hillside, offer a quieter counterpoint to the busy main street. A typical visit runs two to three hours, enough time to walk the main thoroughfare, detour into a side alley or two, and stop for tea or a riverside view where the old town meets the Jialing. The clearest photo opportunities are along the elevated sections of Cinan Street looking back over the tiled rooftops, and at the riverside pier where old boats and stilted houses face the water. Crowds are heaviest on weekends and holiday afternoons, when the main street becomes shoulder to shoulder; arriving on a weekday morning before 10:00AM allows visitors to see the town's architecture and daily rhythms before the tour groups arrive. Evenings bring a different character as lanterns are lit and shops stay open later, though foot traffic remains lighter than midday on weekends.
