Chongqing People's Great Hall (Renmin Auditorium)

The Chongqing People's Great Hall, also known as Renmin Auditorium, stands on Renmin Road in Yuzhong District facing the Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum across People's Square. Completed in 1954, the building combines a Beijing-style circular hall roofed with glazed tiles atop a rectangular podium modeled loosely on the Temple of Heaven, making it one of the most recognizable pieces of mid-20th-century architecture in Chongqing. Visitors enter through the grand front steps into the podium level and can proceed up into the circular auditorium hall, which still functions as a working venue for meetings and performances, with tiered seating rising beneath a domed, painted ceiling. A visit takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour, enough time to see the auditorium interior, the surrounding courtyard corridors, and the plaza views back toward the museum. The best photo vantage points are from the plaza directly in front of the main steps, which frames the full symmetrical facade and dome, and from the museum steps across the square looking back at the Hall. The site is calmest in the morning, before tour groups arrive from the museum opposite, and this is also when reservations for entry are easiest to use since online booking is required in advance. Visiting the Great Hall in the morning and the Three Gorges Museum afterward, or vice versa, makes an efficient half-day pairing given their location facing one another across People's Square.
