Chaotianmen Square

Chaotianmen Square sits at the eastern tip of the Yuzhong peninsula in Chongqing, at the exact point where the Jialing River meets the Yangtze River, historically the site of the city's main river gate and port. Visitors reach the square from Chaoqian Road and find an open plaza with sweeping views up both rivers simultaneously, framed on one side by the modern Raffles City Chongqing towers and their connecting Crystal observation deck, and on the other by the historic riverbanks where cargo boats once docked. The square serves as the boarding point for Yangtze River sightseeing cruises, which depart mainly in the late afternoon and early evening, and as a public gathering space with steps leading down toward the water's edge. A visit to the square itself takes one to two hours, longer if boarding a river cruise. The clearest vantage point for photographing the confluence and the surrounding skyline is from the upper plaza level, which frames both rivers meeting beneath the Raffles City towers and the illuminated bridges beyond. The square draws its largest evening crowds between 7:30 and 9:30PM, when the skyline lighting is at its brightest and reflects across the water, making this the peak time for both sightseers and photographers; daytime visits are quieter and better suited to seeing cruise boats depart or simply appreciating the river confluence in natural light.
