Bulgaria's main history museum, with Thracian gold and the national treasures
The National Museum of History is Bulgaria's largest history museum, housed in the former Boyana Residence at ul. Vitoshko Lale 1 in the Boyana district of Sofia, Bulgaria, at the foot of Vitosha Mountain. It was founded in 1973 and moved to this building, a former state residence of the communist era, in 2000. Its collections hold several hundred thousand objects covering the lands of present-day Bulgaria from prehistory to the 20th century. The permanent exhibition is arranged chronologically across multiple halls, beginning with prehistoric and Thracian cultures, whose gold and silver vessels, jewellery and weapons are among the museum's most celebrated items. Later halls cover Roman and Byzantine rule, the First and Second Bulgarian Empires, with medieval seals, ceramics, coins, jewellery and church objects, followed by the Ottoman period, the National Revival of the 19th century, the Liberation of 1878 and the modern state. The building's architecture is monumental and formal, with large reception halls, marble stairs and wide corridors, and it sits in a landscaped park with views of the mountain. The museum's curatorial approach is chronological and object-led, supported by maps, reconstructions and multimedia displays, and temporary exhibitions complement the permanent display. The museum has undergone several refurbishments, improving climate control and security for the most valuable pieces. The site is close to Boyana Church, and the two are often visited together. Information labels are provided in Bulgarian and English, and the staff can offer guided tours in several languages on request. Visitors should expect a large venue and allow enough time to cover the whole route, or choose selected periods to see.
