Boyana Church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Boyana district at the foot of Vitosha mountain, on ul. Boyansko Ezero in southern Sofia, Bulgaria. The small medieval church has three parts built in different centuries: the eastern section from the 10th or 11th century, a middle two-storey section commissioned in 1259 by sebastokrator Kaloyan, and a 19th-century western extension.

Its fame rests on the murals of 1259, which show lifelike faces, individual expressions and everyday details that are considered a landmark of Eastern European medieval painting and a precursor of Renaissance portraiture. The 89 figures across 240 scenes include portraits of Tsar Konstantin Asen and his wife Irina, as well as the donors Kaloyan and Desislava. Because the paintings are fragile, the interior is limited to small groups for about 10 minutes at a time, with the number of visitors controlled to protect the frescoes, and tickets are sold on site. Inside there is little room, so visitors stand near the walls and listen to the guide describe the main scenes, including the Last Supper and the Christ Pantocrator. A visit usually takes 20-30 minutes, but allow more time for waiting in the queue in summer. The best photo angle of the exterior is from the garden path in front of the entrance, where the church sits among trees; photography of the frescoes is restricted. The nearby National Museum of History occupies the former residence of the Bulgarian rulers in the same district, and the Boyana Waterfall trail begins within walking distance of the church, so many visitors combine them in a half-day trip. Weekday mornings are the calmest, while weekends and the summer months bring queues. Reaching the church from central Sofia takes about 20 minutes by taxi, or around 25 minutes by metro and bus 64.
