Borisova Gradina is the largest and oldest park in Sofia, Bulgaria, stretching along bul. Tsar Osvoboditel and bul. Dragan Tsankov on the eastern side of the centre. The park was laid out from the 1880s, when Prince Alexander of Battenberg commissioned the Swiss gardener Daniel Neff, and it was later expanded and named after Tsar Boris III. It covers several hundred hectares of lawns, mature trees, ponds, sports grounds and winding paths, and it works as the main green lung of the capital. Visitors see the Garden of Lake Ariana, with its pond, rowing boats and fountains, the open-air Vasil Levski National Stadium nearby, the Sofia Zoo edge, the tennis courts, an open-air theatre and a number of monuments, including the Monument of the Soviet Army and the Mausoleum of Georgi Dimitrov site memorials. Rose and flower gardens and the Japanese cherry trees draw crowds in spring, while autumn colours attract photographers. Joggers, cyclists and families use the paths throughout the day, and cafes and kiosks line the main alleys. A visit can last from one hour for a short walk to three hours for a full loop. The best vantage points are the lakeside path at Ariana, which shows the water and trees in one frame, and the main avenue leading from the Sofia University side. Crowds peak on warm weekends and public holidays, particularly around the lake and the sports grounds, while weekday mornings are calm. The park is open all day and night, though paths are less lit away from the main alleys, so evenings are best spent near the cafes. It is easily reached by metro to Sofia University or Vasil Levski Stadium and then a short walk.
