Convento do Carmo Hotel

The Convento do Carmo stands in the heart of Pelourinho, Salvador's UNESCO World Heritage historic district, as one of Bahia's most remarkable hotel conversions. Occupying a former Carmelite convent founded in the 16th century, the building is among the oldest surviving religious structures in Brazil's northeast. The conversion to hotel use preserved the defining architectural elements of the original structure: vaulted stone corridors, centuries-old hand-painted azulejo tiles sourced from Portugal, ornamental ironwork, and the serene internal cloister that once served as the monastic garden. The 79 rooms are distributed across what were originally monks' cells and colonial-era chambers, each individually proportioned and fitted with contemporary amenities including air conditioning, modern bathrooms, and high-speed Wi-Fi while retaining original stonework and period details. The attached Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo chapel is one of the most beautifully preserved Baroque churches in Salvador and is open for visits by hotel guests.
