Best Beaches in Bahia 2025

Discover the most beautiful beaches and coastal experiences in Bahia.

Bahia is Brazil's most culturally rich state, blending African, Indigenous, and Portuguese heritage in a vibrant tapestry of music, cuisine, and traditions. Home to Salvador, one of the Western Hemisphere's oldest cities, Bahia offers stunning Atlantic coastline, Afro-Brazilian culture, and colonial architecture. The state's diverse landscape spans mangroves, forests, and the dramatic Chapada Diamantina highlands.

Top 10 Beaches

The best beaches Bahia has to offer.

1

Praia da Barra

Praia da Barra is one of Salvador's most beloved urban beaches, located at the tip of the Barra peninsula beside the historic Farol da Barra lighthouse. The beach faces the junction where the Baía de Todos os Santos meets the Atlantic Ocean, making it popular for sunset gatherings. On weekends and summer evenings, thousands of Soteropolitanos (Salvador residents) gather here to drink caipirinhas, watch the sunset, and enjoy the beach atmosphere. The Farol da Barra lighthouse towers behind the beach, making it one of the most photogenic spots in the city.

2

Praia de Itapuã

Praia de Itapuã is one of Salvador's most famous beaches, immortalized in Vinicius de Moraes' classic bossa nova song 'Tarde em Itapuã.' Located in the northeastern zone of Salvador, the beach has a more local, neighborhood character than Barra. The adjacent Lagoa do Abaeté — a stunning freshwater lagoon framed by white sand dunes — is unique to Itapuã and makes it one of the most photogenic beach areas in Bahia.

3

Praia de Stella Maris

Stella Maris is a long, upscale beach in northeastern Salvador, popular with the city's middle and upper classes and lined with well-maintained barracas serving excellent fresh seafood and cold drinks. The beach has a livelier, more organized barraca culture than Itapuã and is a favorite for Salvador families on weekends.

4

Praia de Flamengo

Flamengo is Salvador's best surf beach, a 6km stretch of open ocean beach north of Itapuã with consistent waves that attract local surfers. The beach is wilder and more exposed than Barra or Stella Maris, with strong ocean swells. Non-surfers can enjoy the dramatic scenery and local barracas. Be aware that rip currents can be strong — swim only in designated safe areas.

5

Praia do Forte

Praia do Forte is the most famous beach north of Salvador, a calm, reef-protected arc of pale sand with an unusual green tint to its water. The gentle, protected sea makes it excellent for swimming and snorkeling. The Projeto TAMAR sea turtle conservation station is on the beach. The charming pedestrian village behind the beach has excellent restaurants, shops, and boutique hotels.

6

Praia de Guarajuba

Guarajuba is a stunning beach village 60km north of Salvador on the Linha Verde (Green Line) coastal road. The beach is characterized by tall coconut palms growing directly to the shoreline, calm water protected by offshore reefs, and a relaxed fishing community atmosphere. The natural pools at low tide are exceptional. Less developed than Praia do Forte but close by.

7

Primeira Praia (Morro de São Paulo)

The First Beach of Morro de São Paulo is the closest to the village, with the most infrastructure — bars, restaurants, pousadas — and a lively, sociable atmosphere. The beach is beautiful with warm, clear green-blue water. It gets crowded in peak season, which is part of its charm. A Portuguese cannon from the colonial fortress above surveys the scene.

8

Segunda Praia (Morro de São Paulo)

The Second Beach of Morro de São Paulo is considered the best balance of facilities and beauty on the island. A long arc of fine sand with warm, crystal-clear water, it has excellent beach bars and restaurants, volleyball nets, and a vibrant but not overwhelming atmosphere. The beach parties here at night are legendary.

9

Quarta Praia (Morro de São Paulo)

The Fourth Beach of Morro de São Paulo is the longest and most tranquil of the island's numbered beaches. Stretching for kilometers of virtually deserted white sand, it is framed by palm trees and backed by Atlantic Forest. Only a few simple beach barracas operate here. For those seeking peace and natural beauty without the crowds of Primera and Segunda Praia, Quarta Praia is paradise.

10

Praia do Espelho

Widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Brazil, Praia do Espelho (Mirror Beach) lies between Trancoso and Caraíva. Dramatic red-ochre cliffs back the beach, and at low tide the natural rock pools fill with still water that perfectly mirrors the sky — hence the name. The sea is remarkably calm and clear. A handful of sophisticated beach restaurants serve fresh fish. The beach is accessible only by buggy or 4WD, helping to preserve its unspoiled character.
