Bahia is Brazil's most culturally rich state, blending African, Indigenous, and Portuguese heritage in a vibrant tapestry of music, cuisine, and traditions. The state's diverse landscape spans mangroves, forests, and the dramatic Chapada Diamantina highlands.

The best excursions from Bahia.
Morro de São Paulo
Morro de São Paulo is Bahia's most popular island day trip from Salvador — a car-free tropical paradise on Tinharé Island with four beautiful numbered beaches, crystal-clear warm water, excellent seafood restaurants, and a ruined Portuguese fort with panoramic views. The beaches progress from the lively, restaurant-lined Segunda Praia to the tranquil, palm-fringed Quarta Praia. Although technically a day trip is possible (arriving by speedboat at 9am, returning at 5pm), the island is far better enjoyed as a 2-3 night stay. An environmental tax of R$19 is collected upon arrival.
Praia do Forte and Linha Verde Coast
Praia do Forte is a charming beach resort village 80km north of Salvador on the picturesque Linha Verde (Green Line) coastal road. The village has an attractive pedestrian main street lined with restaurants and boutique shops, and the Projeto TAMAR sea turtle conservation center directly on the beach. The beach itself has unusually calm, green-tinted water protected by offshore reefs. Nearby, the Castelo Garcia d'Ávila — the first private castle built in the Americas (1556) — overlooks the surrounding landscape. Return on the same bus or continue north to the beautiful beaches of Guarajuba and Imbassaí.
Cachoeira and the Recôncavo
Cachoeira is one of Brazil's best-preserved colonial towns, located on the banks of the Paraguaçu River in the Recôncavo — the fertile region that surrounds the Bay of All Saints and was the heartland of Bahia's sugar and tobacco economy. The town's historic center is packed with Baroque churches, elegant tile-fronted mansions, and the fascinating Irmandade da Boa Morte museum — dedicated to a sisterhood of Afro-Brazilian women founded by freed slaves. The twin town of São Félix, across the bridge, also has colonial charm. The Caminhos da Cachaça artisan spirit trail passes through the region.
Ilha de Itaparica (Island of Itaparica)
Ilha de Itaparica is the largest island in the Baía de Todos os Santos, just 30km from Salvador and easily reached by ferry. The island is a popular escape for Soteropolitanos seeking a quieter beach experience than the city beaches. The colonial town of Vera Cruz has attractive historic architecture, and the island has calm, tranquil beaches on the bay side — notably Praia de Coroa, Ponta de Areia, and Mar Grande. The water is warmer and calmer than the ocean-facing Salvador beaches.
Chapada Diamantina (Day Tour from Salvador)
Chapada Diamantina is technically too far for a simple day trip from Salvador — the journey is 7 hours by bus each way. However, many tour operators offer 2-day/1-night packages from Salvador that cover the highlights. A proper Chapada Diamantina experience requires a minimum of 3 nights in Lençóis. The park's highlights — Morro do Pai Inácio, Poço Encantado, Cachoeira da Fumaça, Gruta do Lapão — each deserve at least half a day. Plan Chapada as a separate trip within your Bahia itinerary rather than a day trip.
Valença and the Southern Coast
Valença is a charming riverside town on the Bahian southern coast, the main jumping-off point for boat trips to Morro de São Paulo and Boipeba island. The town itself has attractive waterfront streets and a lively local market. From Valença, you can take a boat to Morro de São Paulo (1-2 hours) or the quieter Boipeba (2-3 hours). The journey by bus from Salvador passes through cacao and cashew country.
Bom Jesus dos Passos Island (Ilha dos Frades)
Ilha dos Frades (Friars' Island) is a small, pristine island in the Baía de Todos os Santos, 30km from Salvador. The island has no hotels, no cars, and very limited facilities — just a small fishing community, crystal-clear bay waters ideal for snorkeling, and a beautiful beach. Day tours from Salvador typically include a buffet lunch of fresh seafood on the island.
