Ilha de Itaparica is the largest island in the Baía de Todos os Santos, just 30km from Salvador and easily reached by ferry. The island is a popular escape for Soteropolitanos seeking a quieter beach experience than the city beaches. The colonial town of Vera Cruz has attractive historic architecture, and the island has calm, tranquil beaches on the bay side — notably Praia de Coroa, Ponta de Areia, and Mar Grande. The water is warmer and calmer than the ocean-facing Salvador beaches.

Highlights

  • Calm bay-side beaches
  • Colonial town of Vera Cruz
  • Bom Despacho waterfront
  • Local seafood restaurants
  • Ferry boat experience across the bay

Tips

  • Rent a bicycle on the island to explore beyond the ferry terminal
  • The water on the bay side is calmer and warmer than Salvador's ocean beaches — excellent for families
