Amberd is a medieval fortress on the southern slopes of Mount Aragats in Aragatsotn Province, Armenia, about 65 km north-west of Yerevan. The trip takes about 1.5 hours each way. A taxi round trip from Yerevan costs about 20,000 to 25,000 AMD. The fortress stands at around 2,300 metres on a ridge between two river gorges, and its stone walls, keep and gate date mainly from the tenth to thirteenth centuries, when it belonged to the Pahlavuni family. A small church, Tigran Honents, sits in the gorge below the fortress and can be reached on foot, adding a short, steep walk. Entry to the site is free or a small fee. Because of the altitude, the weather is cooler and changeable, and the road can be closed by snow outside the June to October window. On clear days, Mount Aragats and the Ararat plain are visible from the walls. A day arc is to depart early, stop in Ashtarak to see its old churches and the Kasagh gorge, ride up to Amberd by late morning, spend one to two hours at the fortress and church, and return via Ashtarak for lunch. Simple cafes and roadside stalls operate near the site in summer, but visitors usually bring water and snacks. Food in Ashtarak includes grilled meat and fresh bread. Light jackets and sturdy shoes are recommended, as the terrain is open and wind-exposed. Spring and early summer bring wildflowers on the slopes, while autumn gives clear air and good visibility.
