Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia, a rose-tuff city of about 1.1 million people set at roughly 900-1,300 m above sea level on the Hrazdan River, with snow-capped Mount Ararat visible across the Turkish border on clear days. Founded as the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BC, it combines Soviet-era neoclassical planning around Republic Square, the Cascade arts complex, the Matenadaran manuscript library, the Tsitsernakaberd Genocide Memorial, outdoor cafes, brandy cellars and a growing wine-bar scene. Visitors come for Armenian food and hospitality, very low prices by European standards, and easy day trips to Garni, Geghard, Khor Virap, Echmiadzin and Lake Sevan.

Eating out as a family.
Armenian restaurants welcome children warmly; grilled meats (khorovats), lavash with cheese and lahmajun (flatbread with minced meat) suit young eaters
Mild choices include dolma, plain khorovats chicken, cheese, fruit and lavash; ask for no spice on lahmajun
Many restaurants offer high chairs, but not all: ask on arrival
Tap water in Yerevan is generally drinkable, but many visitors choose bottled water; Jermuk is a local mineral water
Families can dine from noon; kitchens are quieter before 18:00 and busy late in the evening
Family travel tips
Practical advice for stress-free family trips.
Yerevan pavements are uneven and many underpasses have steps, so a carrier is easier than a stroller
Use the Yandex Go taxi app; taxis rarely carry child seats, so bring a travel booster if needed
Pharmacies are plentiful in the centre; many stay open late, and the emergency number is 112
The Cascade and Victory Park involve stairs or hills; plan breaks, and bring sun protection in summer when temperatures can exceed 35 degrees C
