Garni and Geghard are the most popular half-day or full-day excursions from Yerevan, Armenia, and lie in Kotayk Province east of the capital. Garni is about 32 km from the city and Geghard about 42 km, so each leg takes roughly 45 to 75 minutes by road. The standard departure point for public transport is Gai Bus Station on Gai Avenue, where minibuses and city buses run to Garni at irregular intervals of one to two hours. Geghard is not directly served by most of these services, so visitors usually combine a bus to Garni with a taxi onward, or hire a taxi for the whole circuit and agree a waiting fee in advance. Group tours from Yerevan cover both sites and often add Lake Sevan or Khor Virap. Garni is a reconstructed first-century Hellenistic temple of the Ionic order, set on a triangular promontory above the Azat River gorge. It is the only standing pagan colonnaded temple in Armenia, and the site also includes the remains of a Roman-style bathhouse with a mosaic floor. Below the fortress edge, a short walk or taxi ride leads to the Symphony of Stones, a gorge wall of hexagonal basalt columns. Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is partly carved into the rock of a mountain cliff. Its main churches and chambers date from the thirteenth century, and visitors can enter dark rock-cut halls with notable acoustics, khachkars carved into the stone, and a spring chamber inside the complex. A sensible one-day arc starts early from Yerevan so that Garni is reached around 09:30 or 10:00, before tour buses arrive. After about 90 minutes at the temple and gorge, the afternoon is spent at Geghard, where an hour or more is needed to explore the caves and courtyards. Late spring and early autumn offer the most comfortable walking weather, while summer afternoons can be hot and winter brings snow and icy roads. Food stops are plentiful in Garni village, where roadside and family-run restaurants serve lavash baked in a tonir oven, grilled meats and local cheeses; vendors near Geghard sell gata, a sweet bread, and dried fruit. Visitors should carry some cash in Armenian dram, since small entry fees and village purchases are often paid in cash.
