Busanga Bush Camp

Busanga Bush Camp occupies the northern reaches of Kafue National Park on the Busanga Plains — a vast seasonal floodplain that recedes each dry season to reveal nutrient-rich grasslands supporting some of Zambia's densest concentrations of wildlife. The camp is deliberately remote: access requires a light aircraft flight from Lusaka to the Busanga airstrip followed by a short road transfer, with no practical overland route for general visitors. This isolation defines the experience. Kafue is Africa's second-largest national park by area, and the Busanga Plains in its northwest are among the continent's most productive wetland ecosystems per square kilometre for predator activity and specialist grassland species.

The camp operates a true seasonal model, opening in July and closing in October when rising floodwaters make the plains inaccessible. Just six to eight tents are erected each season on raised platforms oriented toward the open grassland. The canvas and timber platform construction is appropriately simple — immersion is the point, not insulation — but tents are spacious with proper four-poster beds, clean linen, and en-suite bathrooms with solar-heated showers. Meals are prepared by a resident cook and served communally under a thatched mess structure, often with zebra, puku, and red lechwe grazing the plain in the immediate foreground.

The Busanga Plains are exceptionally productive for cheetah and African wild dog, both occurring here in higher densities than almost anywhere else in southern Africa. Lion, leopard, side-striped jackal, spotted hyena, and rare sitatunga antelope in the reed margins round out the wildlife portfolio. Game drives in open vehicles at dawn and dusk are the primary activity; guided walks with an armed ranger cover appropriate terrain. The camp operates as part of the Chiawa Camp family of properties, which brings strong operational standards and long-established guiding expertise from the Lower Zambezi.
