My Tho and Mekong Delta River Tour

My Tho, on the northern branch of the Mekong River, is the most common gateway for a Mekong Delta day trip from Ho Chi Minh City. Typical itineraries include a motorized boat ride past floating markets and fruit orchards to one of the river's small islands, a rowboat trip through narrow coconut-palm canals, a stop at a workshop producing coconut candy and rice paper, and a chance to sample tropical fruit while listening to traditional 'don ca tai tu' folk music. The pace is slow and largely about the scenery: dense mangroves, stilt houses, and river traffic that reveal a very different Vietnam from the density of Saigon less than two hours away. Full-day tours often continue to Ben Tre province for a deeper coconut-country experience, while half-day options exist for travelers with limited time.
