Bún Chả Hương Liên

Bún Chả Hương Liên is a compact, two-storey eatery at 24 Lê Văn Hưu in Hanoi's Hai Bà Trưng district, south of Hoàn Kiếm Lake, in northern Vietnam. It serves bún chả, the capital's classic lunchtime dish, in which pork patties and slices of pork belly are grilled over charcoal and served in a warm, sweet-sour broth of fish sauce, sugar, vinegar and green papaya. The bowl arrives alongside a tangle of rice vermicelli, a basket of fresh herbs and a side of chilli and garlic. The restaurant became internationally known after a 2016 meal there, and the set that accompanied it is still sold on the menu as the Combo Obama, pairing bún chả with a fried crab spring roll (nem cua bể) and a bottle of local beer. It is also listed in the Michelin Guide Vietnam, which has added to its reputation as a first stop for visitors to Hanoi. The dining room is busy, casual and informal. Tables are close together, service is quick, and the smell of charcoal smoke from the ground-floor grill is part of the atmosphere. There is no dress code and no need for anything beyond casual clothes. Noise levels rise around midday when office workers and tour groups arrive together. Signature dishes are the bún chả itself, the nem cua bể, and the Combo Obama. Prices are low by international standards, with a typical meal costing roughly 70,000 to 120,000 VND per person, and the combo costing somewhat more than a plain bowl. Beverages are simple: iced tea, soft drinks and beer are the usual choices, and there is no notable wine programme. Reservations are not taken, so the practical way to manage the wait is timing. The restaurant is open daily from about 8AM to 8PM, and the queue is longest around 11:30AM to 1:30PM. Arriving before 11:30AM or after 2PM usually means a shorter wait and a quieter room. Visitors who want the full Hanoi lunch experience often combine it with a walk to nearby Hoàn Kiếm Lake or the Old Quarter afterwards.
