Tam Đảo Ridge and Cổng Trời Trail

The Cổng Trời (Heaven Gate) route starts in the hill-station town of Tam Đảo, inside Tam Đảo National Park in Vĩnh Phúc Province, about 85 km north of Hà Nội in northern Vietnam. Access is by bus from Mỹ Đình Bus Station to Vĩnh Yên and on to Tam Đảo, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours, or by car and driver from the capital. The trail starts from the town centre, where parking is available for private vehicles. Conditions on forest tracks vary, so hikers should ask at the town's park office or a local guide about current access and any permit or fee requirements before setting out.

The round trip is about 10 to 12 km and takes 5 to 7 hours. The climb starts around 900 m in town and gains roughly 500 to 700 m toward the ridge, which places the route between the moderate and hard grades. The surface is forest track, packed dirt and rock, with roots and mud after rain. Bamboo and cloud forest give good shade on the lower and middle sections, while the ridge is more open and windier. Exposure is limited, though mist can reduce visibility sharply.

The main landmarks are the bamboo stands and cloud forest along the ascent and the lookout points toward the ridge, with views across the three peaks that give the Tam Đảo range its name. Because route conditions can change, the ridge lookouts are sensible turn-around points if weather closes in or daylight runs short. The town itself offers a natural base for an early start.

Water sources on the trail should not be relied on, so hikers should carry about 2 litres. Cafes, food stalls and guesthouses in Tam Đảo town provide supplies and shelter before and after the hike. Temperatures are often 10 to 15 C cooler than in Hà Nội, so a warm jacket, rain jacket, headlamp and an offline map are recommended. October to March gives cool, clear days, whereas summer weekends are crowded and often misty.
