Thầy Pagoda and Sài Sơn Hill Walk

Thầy Pagoda (Chùa Thầy) stands in Sài Sơn Commune, Quốc Oai District, in west Hà Nội, Vietnam, about 25 km from the centre. Visitors reach it by Grab or taxi in about 45 minutes, or by city bus from Kim Mã, and the Tây Phương Pagoda nearby is a natural second stop for the same day. The walk starts at the pagoda grounds beside the lake. Parking is available near the site, and visitors should expect to pay a small entrance fee in cash, the exact amount to be confirmed on arrival.

The circuit is short and accessible, about 3 km in total, and takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours. It combines steps up to the hilltop shrine with a lakeside path, with roughly 100 m of ascent, which makes it an easy grade suited to first-time hikers and families. The surface is stone steps, paved paths and packed earth. Shade is provided by trees and temple buildings along parts of the route, and exposure is minimal, though the steps can be slippery after rain.

The main landmark is Thầy Pagoda itself, whose origins go back to the Lý dynasty. A water puppet stage stands on the lake in front of the pagoda, a distinctive feature of northern Vietnamese culture. From the hill on Sài Sơn, a limestone outcrop, visitors gain views over the surrounding landscape and mountains. A sensible turn-around point is the hilltop shrine, from which the same steps or the lakeside path lead back to the start, so nobody needs to commit to the full loop.

Water is available from small vendors near the entrance, though carrying a bottle is sensible. The pagoda halls and temple structures give shelter from rain or strong sun. Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is expected at the temple. October to April is the most comfortable period, and the temple festival, held around the fifth to seventh day of the third lunar month, brings large crowds that make the site busy.
