Cúc Phương National Park Ancient Tree Trail

Cúc Phương National Park, in Nho Quan District, Ninh Bình, is Vietnam's first national park, established in 1962, and lies about 120 km from Hà Nội in northern Vietnam. Visitors reach it by car and driver in about 3 hours, or by bus to Nho Quan followed by a taxi. The trail begins near the park headquarters, where entrance fees are paid in cash, with the current price to be confirmed on arrival. Parking is available at the headquarters, and overnight stays are available inside the park, which allows an early start.

The walk covers about 7 km on forest paths, including the trail to the giant Ancient Tree, and takes 3 to 5 hours. The terrain is mostly flat with short climbs, which suits a moderate grade because of the distance and humidity rather than elevation. The surface is dirt forest path, roots and some boardwalk-style or stepped sections, and it becomes muddy after rain. Primary lowland forest provides dense shade throughout, though the humid air makes the walk tiring.

Key landmarks include the giant Ancient Tree, the primary forest canopy and limestone caves along the park's paths. The Endangered Primate Rescue Centre is a rewarding stop on the same route and is a good way to learn about Vietnam's rare primates. Hikers can turn back at any junction, and the Ancient Tree is the natural objective of the trail. A torch is useful for the caves, and the park's staff can advise on current path conditions.

Water and food are sold near the park headquarters, but supplies on the trail are limited, so hikers should carry about 2 litres. Shelter is available at rest points and at the headquarters area, and accommodation inside the park makes a longer stay possible. Long trousers, insect repellent and a rain jacket are essential in the humid forest. November to March offers dry, cool weather, while June to August brings floods and leeches.
