Collective Memory

Collective Memory is a small curated souvenir shop at 12 Nha Chung in Hang Trong Ward, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi, Vietnam, beside St Joseph's Cathedral and about 200 metres west of Hoan Kiem Lake. It stocks goods sourced directly from Vietnamese makers, including single-origin coffee and cacao, herbal teas, natural soaps, hand-thrown ceramics, notebooks made with do paper and indigo textiles. The shop is a boutique with a made-in-Vietnam focus, and it differs from generic souvenir shopping through its edited, luggage-sized selection and the way every item is labelled with its maker and province. The share of authentic, locally produced goods is very high, and there are few imported trinkets. Prices are fixed and generally range from about 60,000 to 1,500,000 VND, so bargaining is not part of the experience. Payment is accepted in cash and, generally, by card. Visitors seeking a tax refund should ask for a VAT invoice, since eligibility depends on the retailer's registration and the traveller's status. The atmosphere is quiet and browsable, with a compact floor plan that can be seen in ten to twenty minutes and staff who can explain sourcing and brewing or use. Cathedral Square and the surrounding lanes are known for cafes, bakeries and small restaurants, so food and drink are easily found within a short walk even though the shop itself is not a cafe. The best corners are the food and drink shelves, where coffee, cacao and tea make lightweight gifts, and the paper and textile displays for flat-packing items. The shop suits travellers who want dependable, labelled gifts without the time needed to sort through market stalls, and it pairs naturally with a visit to the cathedral or a walk around the lake.
