Bat Trang Ceramic Village Market is a pottery district in Bat Trang Commune, Gia Lam District, about 13 km southeast of Hoan Kiem Lake on the far bank of the Red River outside central Hanoi, Vietnam. Ceramics have been fired here since the 14th century, and the village remains a working area of kilns, warehouses and several hundred shops, plus a covered ceramic market. The goods are tea sets, rice bowls, plates, hand-painted vases, garden pots and decorative pieces, and prices run far below Old Quarter shops for comparable pieces because buyers are close to the producers. This separates it from generic souvenir shopping: much of what is sold is made or finished locally, and buyers can often see kilns and workshops. Quality varies widely. Some shops sell fine hand-painted or hand-thrown work, while others resell mass-produced pieces or items brought in from other kiln areas, so checking glaze finish, weight and any chips is worthwhile. Bargaining is normal, particularly on sets and multiple items, and discounts of 10 to 30 percent are common. Cash is widely used, though larger shops accept cards or bank transfer. No tax refund applies on village purchases. Dozens of studios sell hands-on sessions at the wheel and painting benches, typically 100,000 to 200,000 VND per person. The Bat Trang Ceramic Museum, a cluster of spiral kiln-shaped buildings opened in 2021, anchors the village entrance. The atmosphere is relaxed and rural compared with the city, with narrow lanes, motorbikes and bicycles, though weekends draw tour groups and school parties. Food options include small cafes and eateries in the village, serving noodles, rice dishes and drinks. Visitors can start at the main ceramic market for orientation, then walk the smaller lanes to find workshops and lower-priced shops. Shipping services are available at many larger shops for fragile items.
