West Lake and Truc Bach Lake Shoreline

The West Lake and Truc Bach Lake shoreline is the 17 km perimeter of Hanoi's largest lake and its smaller neighbour, along Thanh Nien Road and Nhat Chieu Street in Tay Ho District, about 3-4 km northwest of Hoan Kiem Lake. It is listed among the city's beach options only because Hanoi is far from the sea: swimming is not permitted and the water is not clean enough for it, so the shoreline functions as a waterside leisure strip rather than a beach. There is no sand to speak of, no surf and no tide.

What the shoreline offers instead is a paved lakeside promenade for walking and cycling, lined with cafes, bars, restaurants, pedalo jetties and shade trees. Swan pedalos can be hired on both Truc Bach and West Lake, and public seating along the water suits a slow afternoon. Tran Quoc Pagoda and Quan Thanh Temple sit on the causeway between the two lakes, adding a cultural stop to the walk. The atmosphere is relaxed and local: joggers and cyclists in the early morning, couples and families at sunset, and a lively cafe scene in the evenings. Facilities are those of an urban public space rather than a beach, with cafes and restaurants supplying toilets and refreshments, and no lifeguards, because bathing is not allowed.

The lake is open, shallow in places and calm, so the mood is quiet even at busy times, though weekend evenings bring crowds to the popular cafe stretches. Sunset is the standout moment year-round, with the light over the water attracting photographers. October to April gives the most comfortable daytime walking, as summer heat and humidity can make midday uncomfortable.

Access is easy from the Old Quarter. Grab or Xanh SM costs about 40,000-60,000 VND (1.54-2.31 USD), and city buses 31, 33, 55A and 55B serve the lake perimeter for 7,000-9,000 VND (0.27-0.35 USD). The full perimeter can be cycled or walked in stages, and bicycles and motorbikes can be found for hire in nearby streets. Visitors wanting to swim should head to West Lake Water Park or to the coast.
