Vietnam National Museum of History

The Vietnam National Museum of History occupies a 1932 building at 1 Trang Tien Street in Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi, designed in the French-Indochinese style that blends European structure with Vietnamese and Chinese decorative elements. With a central octagonal hall, tiled roofs, curved eaves and yellow walls, the building itself is a highlight, and it stands next to the Hanoi Opera House and close to Hoan Kiem Lake. Inside, the collection tells the story of Vietnam from prehistoric times to the end of the Nguyen dynasty and the August Revolution of 1945. Early galleries display stone tools from Son Vi and Hoa Binh cultures, followed by the celebrated Dong Son bronze drums, decorated with scenes of boats, birds and warriors and dating from the first millennium BCE. Later rooms show Champa sculptures in sandstone and terracotta, Buddhist statues, ceramics from the Ly, Tran and Le dynasties, royal seals, weapons, costumes and imperial furniture from Hue. Exhibits are labelled in Vietnamese and English, with maps and timelines to help orientation. A visit takes about 1.5 hours, longer for enthusiasts. Weekday mornings are the quietest time, and the building tends to fill with school groups at other times, especially in term time. The best photo angles are the exterior facade from the courtyard, with the central hall, and the drums in the first-floor gallery. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 8:00AM to 5:00PM, closed on Monday. Adult admission is 40,000 VND, and children under 15 enter free. The museum pairs naturally with the Opera House and the History Museum's sister institution, the Museum of Vietnamese Revolution, close by, so a day of history is easy to arrange within walking distance of the lake.
