Vietnam Museum of Ethnology

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology on Nguyen Van Huyen Street in Cau Giay District, about 8 km west of the Old Quarter in Hanoi, is widely regarded as one of the best museums in Vietnam. It documents the culture and daily life of the country's 54 officially recognised ethnic groups, from the majority Kinh to highland minorities such as the Hmong, Dao, Tay and Ede. The indoor building, opened in 1997, displays costumes, textiles, baskets, musical instruments, farming and fishing tools, religious objects and household items, supported by photographs, videos and English captions that make the collection accessible to international visitors. Exhibits are arranged by theme, covering weddings, funerals, festivals, agriculture and beliefs, so that visitors gain a strong sense of how customs and crafts differ across regions. The outdoor garden is a highlight, with full-size houses brought from across the country, including an Ede longhouse from the Central Highlands, a Tay stilt house, a Bahnar communal house with a soaring roof and a Cham tower. Visitors can climb into some of the houses to see interiors and traditional furnishings. A water puppet stage in the garden occasionally hosts performances, and the museum shop sells crafts and books. Allow around two hours in total, and more if reading in detail. Weekday mornings are the calmest; weekends can bring families and school groups. The best photo angles are the tall communal house against the sky and the stilt houses among the trees. Because the museum is outside the centre, it usually takes 25 minutes by taxi or Grab. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30AM to 5:30PM, and it is closed on Monday. Adult entry is 40,000 VND and children under 15 enter free, making it good value and popular with families.
