Ho Chi Minh Museum

The Ho Chi Minh Museum at 19 Ngoc Ha Street in Ba Dinh District, Hanoi, sits a short walk from the Mausoleum and forms part of the same political-history circuit in the Vietnamese capital. The modern building, opened in 1990, has a striking concrete design with a large lotus-shaped structure at its centre, a nod to the flower long associated with Ho Chi Minh's birthplace and with Vietnamese culture generally. Exhibition halls trace Ho Chi Minh's life from his childhood in Nghe An province through his years abroad to the founding of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the wars that followed, using photographs, letters, documents, personal belongings and life-size dioramas. The second floor gallery shifts from documentary displays to abstract and symbolic art installations, including an upside-down lotus and a room of strange objects that some visitors find puzzling but memorable, and that give the museum a character quite different from the traditional history museums nearby. Information is mostly in Vietnamese with English captions on many key items, and an audio guide or a local guide adds helpful context. A typical visit takes one to one and a half hours. Opening hours are limited: Tuesday to Thursday and weekends in the morning and afternoon, and Monday and Friday mornings only, so visitors should check the schedule locally, especially around public holidays when the museum may close. Crowds are lightest on weekday mornings, while school groups and domestic tour parties can fill the halls at other times. The museum combines naturally with the Mausoleum, the Presidential Palace grounds and the nearby One Pillar Pagoda, and the courtyard and lawns outside are pleasant for photos of the lotus-shaped building. Entry costs 40,000 VND for adults and is free for children under 6.
