Coconut Palms Resort

Coconut Palms Resort is located near White Grass Airport on Tanna Island in Tafea Province, southern Vanuatu. The airport proximity — approximately 5 minutes by road — makes the resort a practical base for the primary reason most visitors come to Tanna: Mt Yasur, one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes. Yasur sits roughly 40–50 minutes by road from the resort, with crater viewing platforms that allow visitors to watch lava explosions from the rim. The volcano is active year-round, though conditions and access paths vary.

The resort has a modest footprint, with traditional-style fan-cooled bungalows set in garden surroundings. The accommodation is basic by international standards — simple timber construction, functional bathrooms, and ceiling fans rather than air conditioning — but represents what Tanna Island offers at the budget end of the market. The setting is genuinely rural and the surroundings reflect Tanna's character: volcanic soil, dense vegetation, and a lifestyle organized around kastom traditions and subsistence agriculture.

The on-site restaurant serves local Vanuatu food with some international options. Ingredients reflect Tanna's agricultural abundance, including locally grown coffee, root vegetables, and fresh produce. The bar stocks basic beverages.

Staff are the resort's most valuable practical asset. They arrange transfers to Mt Yasur at sunset — considered the optimal viewing time — and organize visits to kastom villages where guests can observe traditional practices, kava ceremonies, and John Frum cargo cult gatherings on Fridays. These cultural experiences are the secondary draw of Tanna after the volcano and are handled respectfully through local community relationships.

The resort is a functional base for active island exploration rather than a retreat. Guests primarily seeking comfort or resort amenities are better served in Port Vila.
