Lake Yellowstone Hotel

Lake Yellowstone Hotel stands on the north shore of Yellowstone Lake in the Lake Village area of Yellowstone National Park, approximately 20 miles east of the Old Faithful area via the Grand Loop Road. The building dates to 1891, making it the oldest surviving lodging structure in Yellowstone; it was substantially rebuilt and expanded in Colonial Revival style in 1903 under architect Robert Reamer, who also designed Old Faithful Inn. The white clapboard facade, Ionic columns, and sunroom overlooking Yellowstone Lake give the hotel a visual character that contrasts sharply with the rustic log-and-stone aesthetic common in national park lodges. A 1981 renovation stabilized the structure and updated mechanical systems while retaining the 1903 exterior and interior design. The sunroom is the hotel's defining interior space: a glass-fronted room facing the lake directly, furnished with wicker chairs, and used for live piano performances on summer evenings. The 186 rooms are distributed across the main hotel building, an annex, and separate cabin units. Main hotel rooms on upper floors have lake views; cabin units offer more privacy but no lake views. The Dining Room serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a formal lakeside setting, among the strongest dining experiences within the park. The Lake Bar provides casual drinks and lighter fare. The Lake Village location is central to Yellowstone Lake fishing, shoreline wildlife observation, and boat tours; bison, osprey, and trumpeter swans are regularly observed from the hotel grounds and adjacent shoreline.
