Canaan Valley Resort State Park

Canaan Valley Resort State Park in Davis, Tucker County, West Virginia, occupies a high Appalachian valley at 3,200 to 4,100 feet elevation — the highest major valley in the eastern United States — and operates as a four-season resort combining downhill skiing, mountain biking, hiking, and wildlife observation. The valley floor is a vast wetland complex of bogs, marshes, and meadows covering approximately 14,000 acres, much of which is protected within the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge adjacent to the state park. This high-elevation wetland provides habitat for black bears, white-tailed deer, bald eagles, and waterfowl in numbers unusual for the Appalachian region. The resort's ski area offers 47 trails across 360 skiable acres, with a vertical drop of 850 feet and facilities including snowmaking, a ski school, and rental equipment; the typical ski season runs December through mid-March. Summer and fall use centers on 18 miles of hiking trails, an 18-hole golf course, a heated outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, and mountain biking trails. The main lodge offers hotel-style rooms; the park also has cabins, tent camping, and a campground with full hookups. The park's Nature Center hosts naturalist programs and interpretive exhibits on the valley's unique ecology. Nearby Davis has restaurants, outfitter shops, and access to Blackwater Falls State Park 12 miles away, making Canaan Valley a natural base for a multi-day Tucker County trip. The Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge trails — adjacent to the park and free to access — extend the hiking options considerably.
