ECHO Science Center

ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, is Burlington's waterfront science museum dedicated to the ecology, culture, and natural history of Lake Champlain and the Champlain Valley. The museum opened in 2003 in a contemporary building at the foot of College Street on the Burlington waterfront, and has expanded its exhibit halls to include a working aquarium holding live fish, reptiles, and aquatic invertebrates native to Lake Champlain. The centerpiece of the aquarium section is a large tank displaying lake fish in a naturalistic setting, complemented by tanks of native reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Science programming focuses on hands-on exhibits for children, including a live butterfly garden, weather station demonstrations, and interactive watershed models showing the lake's relationship to surrounding land. The Champ exhibit explores the mythology and reported sightings of the legendary Lake Champlain creature — a perennial favorite with young visitors. The museum's digital theater screens nature films and science documentaries throughout the day. Temporary exhibitions rotate quarterly and have covered topics from climate science to the science of sports. The building's large windows facing Lake Champlain provide exceptional water views and make ECHO one of the few science museums where the subject of study is visible from the gallery windows. On the museum's rooftop terrace, visitors get an elevated view over the lake and the Adirondack Mountains of New York across the water. ECHO is particularly strong as a wet-weather destination and is consistently popular with families visiting Burlington. The museum is within easy walking distance of Church Street and the Burlington Waterfront, making it a natural anchor for a full Burlington day visit. Most visits run 2–3 hours.
