The Alchemist Brewery

The Alchemist Brewery in Stowe is the home of Heady Topper, one of the most sought-after double IPAs in American craft brewing and consistently ranked among the top beers in the world on enthusiast review sites. Founded by John and Jen Kimmich, The Alchemist began as a Waterbury brewpub in 2003 and famously survived Hurricane Irene's destruction of the original location before reopening as a dedicated brewery in Waterbury and later establishing this purpose-built Stowe facility in 2016. The Stowe location on Cottage Club Road serves as the primary retail outlet for The Alchemist's canned beer, which is not distributed outside a limited Vermont geographic radius and is available to-go only — there is no on-site taproom, bar service, or beer consumed on the premises. The retail shop sells four-packs and mixed cases of Heady Topper, Focal Banger, Crusher, and seasonal releases from a clean, well-designed retail space. The brewery building itself is architecturally striking — a modern industrial structure with exposed systems and a thoughtful aesthetic reflecting the Kimmiches' attention to craft. Wednesday is the most important day of the week: that is when the weekly allocation of Heady Topper is typically released, and enthusiasts queue from before opening at 11 AM.
