Delicate Arch (Arches National Park)

Delicate Arch is a freestanding natural sandstone arch 52 feet tall and 32 feet wide, located in the southeastern section of Arches National Park near Moab in Grand County, Utah. It is the most recognizable natural landmark in Utah, appearing on the state's license plate and serving as an unofficial symbol of the American Southwest. The arch stands at the rim of a steep sandstone bowl above a 150-foot vertical drop into the canyon floor below, framing the La Sal Mountains to the southeast. The standard approach begins at Wolfe Ranch Trailhead, 12 miles from the Arches Visitor Center on the main park road. The 3-mile round-trip hike gains 480 feet across open slickrock with full sun exposure and no shade. The first mile follows a flat gravel path past the Wolfe Ranch historic homestead cabin (circa 1888) and a panel of Ute petroglyphs on a nearby rock face. The trail then ascends open Entrada Sandstone slickrock, marked by cairns, before a final narrow ledge traverse above the bowl delivers visitors to the arch. The arrival at the arch is intentionally theatrical — walkers round a sandstone fin and the arch appears suddenly against the open sky with the La Sal Mountains as a backdrop. Sunset is the prime viewing time; the arch glows deep red and orange in the last hour of daylight as shadows fill the canyon below. An alternative viewpoint is accessible via a 0.5-mile trail from the Upper Delicate Arch Viewpoint parking area, offering a distant but elevated perspective across the bowl without the full hike. The bowl at the arch base draws dozens of photographers in the final hour before sunset, and early positioning (arriving 90 minutes before sunset) is needed to find a good spot on the rim.
