Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands National Park in San Juan and Grand Counties, Utah, encompasses 337,598 acres of red rock canyons, mesas, and river gorges carved by the Colorado and Green Rivers over millions of years. The park divides into three distinct districts — Island in the Sky, The Needles, and The Maze — each with its own entrance and offering a dramatically different landscape. Island in the Sky, the most visited district, sits atop a flat-topped mesa 2,000 feet above the canyon floor, reached 32 miles from Moab via US-191 north. The Mesa Arch Trail (0.5-mile loop) leads to a canyon-spanning arch that at sunrise frames the Colorado River gorge and La Sal Mountains in a golden glow — one of the most photographed scenes in Utah. Grand View Point at the mesa's southern end commands a 360-degree panorama over more than 100 miles of canyon terrain. The 0.5-mile Upheaval Dome trail from the mesa road reaches a mysterious salt dome crater — a formation whose origins as either a meteor impact site or salt dissolution remain debated by geologists. The Needles district, 76 miles south of Moab via US-191 and UT-211, offers multi-day backpacking and 4WD jeep routes through towering banded sandstone spires and the joint trail corridors of Chesler Park. The Maze is one of the most remote roadless wilderness areas in the lower 48 states, requiring four-wheel drive, technical route-finding skill, and multi-day self-sufficiency. The Colorado and Green Rivers form the boundary between districts and can be experienced by whitewater rafting through Cataract Canyon on Class III to V rapids in the park's southern reach, with volume and difficulty peaking in spring.
