Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Palo Duro Canyon State Park preserves 27,000 acres of the Texas Panhandle's most spectacular terrain. The canyon stretches more than 120 miles in length, reaches widths up to 20 miles, and plunges nearly 800 feet below the surrounding High Plains tableland—earning the title of the 'Grand Canyon of Texas' and the designation as the second-largest canyon in the United States. The canyon's geology spans 250 million years, with exposed rock layers shifting from deep red Permian mudstones at the floor through orange and yellow Triassic-era formations to the Lighthouse—a distinctive spire of red clay capped by erosion-resistant sandstone that has become the park's iconic symbol.

The Lighthouse Trail is the park's signature hike—a 5.7-mile round-trip route descending into the canyon, crossing the prairie-dog-dotted canyon floor, and culminating at the 310-foot Lighthouse formation. The trail is moderately difficult with minimal shade; dawn and late-afternoon starts are strongly advisable from May through September when temperatures at the canyon bottom regularly exceed 100°F. Mountain biking is permitted on several designated trails, and the CCC Road (a scenic drive) winds 16 miles into the depths of the canyon with multiple overlooks.

The TEXAS outdoor musical, performed in an amphitheater carved into the canyon wall, has run every summer since 1966 and is widely described as America's largest outdoor musical. Performances run Tuesday through Sunday from June through mid-August, with the canyon walls serving as a natural backdrop for the dramatic lighting display. Hayride tours and historical programs also operate during the summer season.

Camping is available at developed and primitive sites throughout the canyon. The park's remote Panhandle location means genuinely dark skies and minimal light pollution—an underappreciated stargazing destination.
