Minuteman Missile National Historic Site

Minuteman Missile National Historic Site, located along Interstate 90 near Philip in western South Dakota, preserves a decommissioned Minuteman II intercontinental ballistic missile system from the Cold War, including a launch control facility (Delta-01) and an intact missile silo (Delta-09) approximately six miles apart. The site interprets the U.S. Air Force's 44th Strategic Missile Wing, which maintained 150 Minuteman II missiles hidden beneath the prairie across 13,500 square miles of South Dakota from 1963 to 1994 — a significant portion of the nation's nuclear deterrent during the height of the Cold War. Delta-01 Missile Alert Facility is a surface-level installation containing crew quarters, communications equipment, and a blast-resistant underground launch control capsule where two-person Air Force crews maintained 24-hour nuclear alert for over three decades. Delta-09 is the only publicly accessible Minuteman II silo in the world, with the original LGM-30G Minuteman II missile still present in the silo beneath a transparent viewing cover. Underground tours at Delta-01 descend 31 feet via ladder to the original launch control capsule with intact launch consoles, crew chairs, communication systems, and launch keys in their authentic Cold War configuration. All underground tours at Delta-01 require advance reservation through recreation.gov; Delta-09 surface viewing is walk-up. A visitor center on I-90 (Exit 131) provides a free film and exhibits before visitors drive to the remote field facilities. The site is approximately 60 miles east of the Badlands National Park visitor center.
