Gold Beach (Rogue River Mouth)

Gold Beach sits where the Rogue River meets the Pacific Ocean in Curry County on Oregon's remote south coast, approximately 330 miles south of Portland. The beach is composed of fine dark sand and scattered gravel, and the shoreline runs for several miles in both directions from the river mouth with minimal development. The Rogue River estuary creates a dynamic and visually striking convergence of river and ocean—the beach changes character with river flow and tidal conditions, and the dark sand contrasts sharply against the pale surf. The area takes its name from the gold once panned from the river sands in the mid-19th century during a short-lived coastal gold rush. Gold Beach and the surrounding Curry County coastline are among the least visited anywhere on the Oregon coast, remaining uncrowded even in peak summer. The river is the central attraction: jet boat tours depart from the harbor and travel upstream into the Rogue River Wilderness, one of the first rivers to receive federal Wild and Scenic designation. Tours range from 64-mile round trips to 104-mile excursions reaching the backcountry settlement of Agness, with wildlife sightings including osprey, otters, and black bears along the canyon walls. Fishing charters for Chinook salmon, coho salmon, and steelhead depart from Gold Beach Marina on a seasonal basis. The town center is compact with a grocery store, restaurants, and motels on US-101. WildSpring Guest Habitat, a highly regarded eco-lodge set in old-growth forest, is situated north of town and offers a distinctive base for the area. The nearest airport is Gold Beach Airport (GOL) with limited Pacific Air flights; otherwise the 5.5-hour drive from Portland on US-101 is the primary access option.
