Newport's Nye Beach

Newport's Nye Beach is a broad, sandy stretch of the Oregon coast situated in the historic Nye Beach neighborhood of Newport, Lincoln County, approximately 145 miles southwest of Portland. The beach faces due west and extends for over a mile, flanked by low bluffs capped with historic buildings including the Sylvia Beach Hotel and the Inn at Nye Beach. The sand is pale gray and the beach wide at low tide, narrowing at high tide when the bluffs become more prominent. Water temperatures remain cold year-round and the surf is moderate to heavy, making conditions better for walking, photography, and scenery than for swimming. The Nye Beach neighborhood itself is a cultural and artistic hub distinct from Newport's more commercial bayfront area—it contains independent restaurants, wine bars, a performing arts theater, art galleries, and Victorian-era accommodations. This character gives the beach a more refined, creative atmosphere compared to many Oregon coast destinations. Public beach access is via several stairways descending from NW Coast Street to the sand; the descent is short but requires navigating stairs rather than a ramp. The famous Yaquina Bay Bridge, a 1936 Art Deco steel arch bridge, is visible from the south end of the beach. Newport's Oregon Coast Aquarium and Hatfield Marine Science Center are within a 10-minute drive. Local COAST bus service covers the Newport area for approximately $1 USD per ride, making the beach accessible to visitors without cars.
