Hanging Rock State Park

Hanging Rock State Park in Stokes County, North Carolina sits along the northern escarpment of the Sauratown Mountain range, an isolated chain of quartzite summits rising 1,000 feet above the surrounding Piedmont farmland. The park's 7,000 acres protect a rugged landscape of exposed rock outcrops, crystalline streams, waterfalls, and diverse forest communities unusual for the Piedmont region. Hanging Rock itself is a large exposed quartzite outcrop at approximately 2,149 feet elevation, reached via a 1.4-mile moderately strenuous trail that ends on an open rock summit with panoramic views north across the Dan River basin into Virginia and southwest toward Winston-Salem. The trail system includes routes to multiple waterfalls: Moore's Wall, one of the tallest exposed rock faces in North Carolina at over 200 feet, is a destination for technical rock climbers and hikers alike. Window Falls, accessible via a moderate trail, passes through a natural rock arch before dropping into a pool — an unusual geologic formation. The park lake near the entrance supports swimming with lifeguard coverage from Memorial Day through Labor Day, pedal boat rentals, and fishing for bass and catfish. Two campgrounds — traditional tent and RV sites near the park office and ridge cabins above the lake — make multi-day exploration feasible. The park's relative isolation from major cities keeps crowds manageable except on peak summer and fall weekends.
