North Carolina Zoo

The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro is one of the largest natural-habitat zoos in the world, covering more than 2,600 acres with two distinct sections — North America and Africa — connected by a paved pathway network spanning nearly 5 miles. Unlike urban zoos with dense enclosures, the NC Zoo emphasizes expansive naturalistic habitats where animals roam across several acres of terrain. The North America section features polar bears, black bears, grizzly bears, elk, river otters, bison, alligators, and a substantial bird collection. The Africa section houses African elephants, giraffes, chimpanzees, lions, gorillas, white rhinos, and meerkats in habitats designed to replicate native ecosystems. The Lemur Island exhibit places ring-tailed and red lemurs on islands surrounded by water moats, eliminating traditional wire barriers for a closer viewing experience. The zoo maintains an active conservation program contributing to species survival plans for several critically endangered animals. Plan for a four to six hour visit to cover both sections adequately, as the distances between habitats are substantial — comfortable walking shoes are essential. Complimentary tram service runs between sections for visitors unable to walk the full circuit. The zoo's location midway between Raleigh and Greensboro — roughly one hour from each — makes it a practical day trip from multiple North Carolina cities. Food vendors and a restaurant are located within each section.
