The combination of Pamlico Sound — a vast, shallow body of water between Hatteras Island and the mainland — with steady Atlantic-driven winds creates near-ideal kiteboarding conditions for much of the year. The sound's average depth of approximately 4.5 feet allows a fallen rider to stand without being submerged, a significant safety advantage over ocean kiteboarding and a key factor in the area's appeal for instruction. Real Kiteboarding, operating from Avon on NC-12, is the primary instructional outfitter at Cape Hatteras and has trained thousands of students since its founding. Instructors hold certifications from the International Kiteboarding Organisation (IKO) or equivalent governing bodies. A beginner progression consists of an initial 3-hour lesson covering kite theory, wind window concepts, and body dragging — controlling the kite in the water without a board attached.
