White Water Center (Charlotte)

The U.S. National Whitewater Center (USNWC) in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a 1,300-acre outdoor recreation campus on the banks of the Catawba River, approximately 10 miles west of downtown Charlotte at 5000 Whitewater Center Pkwy. The facility was originally developed as a training venue for U.S. Olympic and Paralympic canoe and kayak teams and hosted the 2011 Pan American Canoe and Kayak Championships. It has since expanded into one of the most comprehensive public outdoor recreation destinations in the southeastern United States, open year-round with a day pass granting access to a broad suite of activities across whitewater paddling, land sports, and aerial challenge elements. The centerpiece is the world's largest man-made whitewater river: a recirculating pump channel system that generates Class III-IV rapids on demand. The channel can be configured into different rapid sequences to match training objectives or adjusted to beginner-friendly flows for recreational raft trips. Guided whitewater rafting on the channel operates primarily April through October. No prior paddling experience is required for guided raft trips; the typical minimum age is 8 to 10 years old subject to operator judgment and minimum weight requirements. Separate kayak instruction programs run on the Olympic channel and adjacent flatwater lake. Beyond whitewater, the day pass unlocks mountain biking on over 50 miles of singletrack within the campus, zip lines over the river gorge, rope courses, flatwater kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals on the Catawba River lake, and a climbing wall. Seasonal offerings include trail running events, paddling competitions, and outdoor yoga sessions. A full-service restaurant, cafe, gear shop, and equipment rental operation are located on-site, making it practical to arrive with nothing and spend a complete day at the facility. All whitewater equipment including helmets, life jackets, paddles, and wetsuits when required is included in day-pass pricing. The facility maintains a dedicated in-water rescue team positioned throughout the rapid channel during all whitewater operating hours, and all guides hold current Swiftwater Rescue certifications. Safety briefings are mandatory before entering the whitewater channel regardless of prior experience.
