Taughannock Falls State Park

Taughannock Falls State Park near Trumansburg in Tompkins County, New York, is centered on a single geological spectacle: a 215-foot plunge waterfall — taller than Niagara Falls by approximately 33 feet — dropping from a narrow limestone lip into a wide, amphitheater-shaped gorge carved by glacial and fluvial erosion. The falls are named for a Lenape leader; the gorge is the result of Taughannock Creek undercutting softer shale beneath the resistant limestone cap rock, creating the sheer vertical headwall that distinguishes a plunge fall from the more common cascade type. The park provides two complementary approaches to the falls. The Gorge Trail follows Taughannock Creek from its mouth on Cayuga Lake 1.5 miles into the gorge, approaching the falls from below through a corridor of layered shale walls rising 400 feet; the trail ends at a viewing area 200 feet from the base of the falls with the full 215-foot column of water visible from ground to plunge pool. The Rim Trail circumnavigates the gorge above, providing top-down views from observation points on both the north and south rims that look directly down the gorge axis and into the amphitheater. The park's Cayuga Lake frontage includes a swimming beach, boat launch, and picnic facilities. The falls are most powerful in spring when snowmelt fills Taughannock Creek to capacity, but the gorge's scale is impressive at any season. Camping is available within the park, and the cities of Trumansburg and Ithaca provide nearby dining and lodging.
