Duran's New Mexican Kitchen is one of downtown Albuquerque's most enduring dining institutions, operating on Central Avenue — the city's famed Route 66 corridor — since the 1970s. The restaurant is a family-owned operation that has maintained its commitment to old-school New Mexican cooking across decades of ownership transitions and neighborhood change around it. What distinguishes Duran's from the many New Mexican restaurants in Albuquerque is its insistence on making things by hand: flour tortillas are rolled and cooked fresh on the griddle each morning, tamales are assembled and slow-steamed in-house, and the chile sauces — both red and green — are made daily from New Mexico-grown pods and peppers. The carne adovada plate is the restaurant's signature: pork marinated and slow-braised in red chile until it becomes tender enough to pull apart, served with beans, rice, and those exceptional house tortillas. Green chile stew is equally accomplished, and the Christmas enchilada plate — layered tortillas with both red and green chile, cheese, and onion — is the definitive way to sample both the kitchen's sauces in a single sitting. The dining room is functional and straightforward — booths, a small counter, and New Mexico-themed décor without pretension — and prices reflect the neighborhood: most plates fall between $9 and $15. Duran's is open Monday through Friday for breakfast and lunch, and Saturday for breakfast only, closing in the early afternoon.
