Red River Gorge: Rough Trail to Sky Bridge

The route from the Rough Trail junction to Sky Bridge in Kentucky's Red River Gorge Geological Area combines two of the area's most rewarding trail segments into a 3.2-mile round-trip hike through sandstone bluff country. The trailhead is located on Sky Bridge Road, accessible from KY-715 near Stanton, KY 40380. Parking is limited to approximately 10 vehicles in the unpaved lot; the area fills rapidly on fall and spring weekends, and overflow parking along the road shoulder is common. No permit is required for day use, though a National Forest recreation pass may be required at certain fee station parking lots in the surrounding area. The trail begins with a moderate climb of approximately 400 feet through mixed hardwood forest before cresting a sandstone ridge. The surface alternates between packed dirt, exposed sandstone slabs, and brief scrambling sections across rock outcroppings where hands may be needed for balance; trail shoes with firm grip are recommended. The forested lower and mid sections provide substantial shade, while the ridge approach and arch area open to full sun. Sky Bridge itself is a sandstone arch spanning approximately 90 feet in length and 75 feet in width, making it one of the broadest arches in the Red River Gorge. The trail passes directly beneath the arch before ascending wooden steps to the surface, where hikers can stand on the arch and look down into the forested hollow below. A short loop around the arch summit adds viewing angles from both sides of the formation. There are no guardrails at the arch edge; caution is required in windy conditions. The descent returns via the same route. Wildlife sightings including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, box turtles, and woodland birds are common in the forested lower corridor. The Rough Trail continues beyond the Sky Bridge junction into the deeper backcountry for hikers seeking a more demanding full-day or overnight outing. No water is available on trail.
