Auxier Ridge Trail (Red River Gorge)

Auxier Ridge Trail in Kentucky's Red River Gorge Geological Area offers one of the most celebrated ridge-top hikes in the eastern United States, located within the Daniel Boone National Forest in Powell County. The trailhead is reached via KY-191 near Tunnel Ridge Road, approximately 50 miles east of Lexington; roadside parking fills rapidly on weekends, so an early start is advisable. No day-use permit is required for hiking; overnight backcountry camping within the geological area requires a free permit from the Daniel Boone National Forest district office or through an online reservation portal. The trail measures 4.1 miles round-trip with approximately 350 feet of cumulative elevation gain, classified as moderate owing to exposed ridge terrain, sustained climbing, and rocky underfoot conditions. The route ascends steadily from the trailhead through a mixed hardwood forest where packed dirt and root-laced terrain predominate before emerging onto the spine of Auxier Ridge. Once on the crest, the surface transitions to open sandstone outcroppings with minimal shade and full exposure to sun and wind—a significant factor during summer heat. Key landmarks along the ridge include Courthouse Rock, a prominent sandstone monolith accessible via a brief spur near the ridgeline, and the terminus overlook at the far end of the ridge, which delivers unobstructed views across the gorge canyon and the winding Red River below. The Double Arch formation is visible from several points along the crest on clear days. No water sources exist anywhere on the trail; all water must be carried from the trailhead, and a minimum of 1.5 liters is recommended. There are no shelter huts or emergency refuges on route. The return leg retraces the ridge before descending back through the forested corridor to the trailhead. Hikers seeking greater distance can link Auxier Ridge with the Courthouse Rock Trail for a combined 5.5-mile loop. October brings exceptional foliage color to the gorge walls; spring wildflowers and dogwood blooms peak along the lower forest section in April and May. Cell service is unreliable throughout the Red River Gorge Geological Area, and an offline map downloaded in advance is strongly recommended.
