Lake Macbride State Park Beach

Lake Macbride State Park Beach is set within Iowa's second-largest state park, approximately 15 miles north of Iowa City near the town of Solon in eastern Iowa. The beach fronts Lake Macbride, an 812-acre reservoir created in the 1930s, and occupies a sandy swim area surrounded by mature forested terrain — a natural character that distinguishes it from the commercial resort lakes of northwest Iowa. The water is clear and cool, reflecting the tree line along the reservoir's wooded banks, and the sandy bottom slopes gradually through the designated swimming zone. Seasonal lifeguards are stationed on summer weekends, but weekday visits are unguarded; visitors with children should plan accordingly and remain within posted swim areas. Day use at the park is free, with no vehicle sticker required. A boat launch serves fishing and non-motorized watercraft, and an extensive network of hiking trails winds through the surrounding woodland, making it practical to extend a beach visit into a full outdoor day. Camping facilities within the state park accommodate overnight stays, and the proximity to Iowa City makes the park a regular destination for University of Iowa students and local families on summer weekends. Picnic areas adjacent to the beach provide shaded seating, and basic restroom facilities are available nearby. No food vendors operate at the beach, so arriving with packed supplies or stopping in Solon beforehand is advisable. The 20-minute drive from Iowa City via US-6 West and Mehaffey Bridge Road is straightforward, and free day-use parking is available at the main beach access area.
