Clear Lake City Beach

Clear Lake City Beach is the main public swimming area on Clear Lake, a natural glacial lake covering approximately 3,643 acres in north-central Iowa near the city of Clear Lake. The municipal beach is maintained by the city park system and offers a wide stretch of sandy shoreline with calm, relatively shallow water well-suited to family swimming. Clear Lake's open basin allows summer breezes to keep the waterfront comfortable during hot Iowa afternoons, while the sandy lake bottom provides reliable footing throughout the swim zone. Seasonal lifeguards patrol the designated swim area during summer months, and a playground adjacent to the beach extends visit options for families with young children. Picnic shelters with tables and grills are available on a first-come, first-served basis within the park, and restrooms are located nearby. Free parking is positioned close to the beach entrance, making this one of Iowa's most accessible public lake swimming destinations. The surrounding city of Clear Lake — a short walk or drive from the beach — offers dining, ice cream, and retail options. The historic Surf Ballroom, a nationally recognized music venue associated with the final concert of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper before the 1959 plane crash, is located in the town center and can be combined with a beach outing. At approximately 115 miles north of Des Moines via I-35, Clear Lake City Beach is a practical day trip from central Iowa. Water clarity is generally good in early summer and can decline during late-season algae growth, a common pattern in Iowa's natural lakes.
