Iowa Children's Museum

The Iowa Children's Museum at 1451 Coral Ridge Ave in Coralville is a hands-on interactive museum occupying 27,000 square feet inside the Coral Ridge Mall, adjacent to Iowa City in Johnson County. Designed for children from infants through age 12, the museum organizes its exhibits into discovery zones that span science, creative arts, technology, physical challenge, and imaginative play. The Kids Town exhibit recreates a miniature urban environment where children act out adult roles in a grocery store, veterinary clinic, post office, fire station, and newspaper room — each with authentic props and child-scaled furnishings. The Ag-a-Venture exhibit introduces Iowa's farming heritage through hands-on crop sorting, animal care simulations, and grain elevator activities designed for preschool through early elementary ages. The engineering zone features large-scale building blocks, water tables, and mechanical challenge stations. A dedicated Tots area provides soft-play spaces for children under three with age-appropriate sensory experiences separated from the main museum floor. Rotating temporary exhibitions typically arrive two to three times per year and cover topics ranging from space exploration to body science. The museum is accredited by the Association of Children's Museums. Admission is $8 for visitors of all ages; children under one year old enter free. Iowa City Metro Transit Route 11 serves Coral Ridge Mall from downtown Iowa City, making the museum one of the few major family attractions in the area accessible without a car. Weekday mornings before 11:00 AM offer the smallest crowds, as school field trip groups typically arrive after 10:30 AM.
